Discover the true Caribbean on the Nature Island called Dominica (pronounced dom-in-EE-cuh). Not to be confused with the Dominican Republic, this English-speaking island is located between the French islands of Martinique and Guadeloupe in an area called the Windward Islands. It is officially called the Commonwealth of Dominica.
Kubuli, the national beer, was named after Dominica’s Pre-Columbian name – Wai’tu kubuli, which means “Tall is her body”. Mountainous, lush and green is the best way to describe Dominica with its 365 rivers and waterfalls. It is truly an unspoiled island paradise.
Dominica became an independent nation in 1978 but is still a part of the British Commonwealth. English is the official language although you will hear Creole and French based patois spoken.
Melville Hall Airport (DOM) on the east coast is 35 miles of winding mountainous roads from Roseau, the capital located on the west coast. The currency is the Eastern Caribbean Dollar (XCD). This is an island you won’t want to miss.
