A popular sun destination for North Americans makes the Dominican Republic a desirable place to own or rent a vacation home in the Caribbean. The DR shares the island of Hispaneola with Haiti and makes up part of the Greater Antilles archipelago. The Dominican Republic became the site of the first permanent European settlement in the Americas, namely Santo Domingo, the country's capital and Spain's first capital in the New World. The Dominican Republic is now working towards a representative democracy.
