Schooner Bay, Abaco Island

The pristine dunes of Schooner Bay

Missed our January tour? Don't delay - get on our February waitlist to site inspect Schooner Bay! Contact us for details Schooner Bay is inspired by the architectural and cultural history of The Bahamas and guided by the design of New Urbanism. Bahamian developer and community builder Orjan Lindroth and his team of local and international architects, engineers and consultants have crafted a small harbour town. It will be the first planned and open community designed to attract families to live, work and play in a setting that incorporates the best of our past with the hopes of our future.

Enjoy a walkable and car-less community in a spectacular island seaside setting. Near enough to airports and town services but sheltered by miles of un-spoilt beaches and vast tropical parks with protected bird species and adjacent marine life.

Location

Schooner Bay is blessed with a spectacular location on the Atlantic side of Great Abaco Island. Abaco Island is very accessible from Florida and Nassau. Schooner's beach stretches for half a mile and a smaller beach, Little Bridge Bay, is situated south of The Harbour.

Village/Community

The Schooner Bay site features sweeping views of the ocean. The Harbour functions as the centre of the community, surrounded by shops, restaurants and other mixed-use buildings generating a civic and commercial vitality. Schooner Bay offers significant space for community gathering, with a continuous promenade curving along the edge of the water, as well as a central plaza overlooking The Harbour.

The Harbour - Phase I

At the heart of Schooner Bay is The Harbour. Like all working sea villages, The Harbour will be a vibrant centre shared by Bahamians and visitors alike. Fishermen will bring their catch daily to The Fish Market. Children will embark on their first sailing adventures. All will enjoy a safe harbour for working and recreational vessels.

The 14-acre Harbour provides more than a mile of waterfront experience, and serves as the town's primary gathering place. It will line the water, featuring restaurants, shops and cafés. The promenade will be active at all times of day. The Yacht Club will be the centre of activity for boaters at Schooner Bay.

The Black Fly Bonefish Club & Anglers Village will include six hotel rooms, a full Outfitter Store and a restaurant that will feature regional cuisine. Schooner Bay is a great fishing destination!

The Public Spaces

The streets in Schooner Bay will be different from typical suburban thoroughfares. The hierarchy of roads and paths at Schooner Bay are designed to create a pedestrian community with controlled use in a manner that enhances community life and unnecessary carbon emissions. There will be narrow roads and intimate lanes, as well as secret footpaths and beach walks. Distances between home, harbour and beach will be short. People will walk, bike, or take quick golf cart rides. Cars will not intrude on village life.

The inclusion of squares and greens, as well as civic buildings in a village, are as fundamental to community life as the home is to family and the office is to work. It is in these ‘third places' where the bonds of a community are formed and the sense of place is established.
