History
Carib Indians aggressively prevented European settlement on St. Vincent until the 18th century. Enslaved Africans intermarried with the Caribs and became known as Garifuna or Black Caribs. The French settlers began cultivation of crops in 1719. In 1763, St. Vincent was ceded to Britain and then went back and forth until 1783, when the British regained control under the Treaty of Paris. Conflict between the British and the Black Caribs continued until 1796 when 5,000 Black Caribs were eventually deported to Roatan, Honduras. Due to the shortage of help, indentured servants came from Portugal in the 1840s and from East India in the period between 1861 - 1880 to be agricultural workers on the plantations. From 1763 until independence in 1979, St. Vincent passed through various stages of colonial status under the British. Natural disasters have featured in the country's history. In 1902 La Soufrière erupted, killing 2,000. Again in April 1979 another volcanic eruption caused extensive agricultural damage. Hurricanes in 1980, 1987, 1998, and Hurricane Lenny in 1999 caused extensive damage to the west coast of the island and compromised banana and coconut plantations.
