The Bahamas, is an archipelago and country on the northwestern edge of the West Indies. The earliest inhabitants – over 7000 years ago were the Siboney Indians. They relied on the ocean for their food. From 900 – 1500 AD, the Lucayan people settled here. They enjoyed a peaceful way of life and developed a viable political, social and religious life.
At the turn of the 17thC, many privateers and pirates came here, the most famous ones being Blackbeard and Calico Jack. Nassau, the capitol city on New Providence Island was a haven for pirates who gathered their crew there before heading further into the Caribbean.
In 1955, Freeport, Grand Bahama Island was established by the government of The Bahamas as a free trade zone. The Grand Bahama Port Authority Ltd, were granted lands to build a cosmopolitan centre and paradise haven for tourists and industry.
The Bahamas became an independent country within the Commonwealth in 1973.
Of Note: Located in the Atlantic Ocean, the Bahamas consists of 700 tropical islands. Approximately 30 islands are inhabited by people. The name Bahamas derives from the Spanish baja (“shallow”) and mar (“sea”). Festivals and Events
