Bonaire

Bonaire is an island and special municipality within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, in the westernmost group of the Caribbean Sea and also referred to as part of the Netherland Antilles. (St. Maarten, Saba and St. Eustatius are also part of this group). Bonaire lies 50 miles (80 km) north of the Venezuelan coast and 20 miles (32 km) east of Curaçao. Bonaire is also one of the Dutch islands in what is commonly referred to as the A,B,Cs (Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao). The capital is Kralendijk.

The northern part of Bonaire is hilly, with a peak, Brandaris, 787 feet (240 metres) high, while the southern part is flat, with desert-like vegetation. An adjacent islet, Klein Bonaire (Little Bonaire), with an area of 3 square miles (8 square km), is uninhabited, but its sandy white beaches are popular with divers.

Of Note: Bonaire is fringed by a coral reef with 60+ dive sites accessible to SCUBA divers from the shore along the lee side of the island. Bonaire caters to the dive community with low rise boutique hotel accommodation. The entire coastline of the island was designated a marine sanctuary in 1979, in an effort to preserve and protect the delicate coral reef and the marine life which depends on it.
