The Cayman Islands are the outcroppings of a submarine mountain range that extends northeastward from Belize in Central America over to Cuba. The coasts are limestone fringes with numerous marine fossils interspersed with sandy beaches and enclosed by coral reefs. A pleasant tropical climate is one of this British Overseas Territory’s main assets so tourism is of prime importance to the economy. The Cayman Islands encompasses 3 very unique islands with each having a different personality.
Grand Cayman: The largest island within the group is where the capital city of George Town is located. The Cayman Islands are renowned as an offshore banking centre, owing to the absence of direct taxes. Hundreds of banks and trust companies, including most of the world’s 50 largest banks, are registered in the Caymans, making the islands one of the largest financial centres in the world.
Cayman Brac: This island is best suited for the adventurous spirit with its world class diving and deep sea fishing
Little Cayman: The smallest of the three islands is the most tranquil and offers nature enthusiasts a diverse wildlife, including endangered iguanas and seabirds.
Of Note: Christopher Columbus landed in the Cayman Islands on 10 May 1503 when his ships were blown off course by strong winds. He saw two small islands so full of turtles that he named them Las Tortugas, Spanish for “the turtles.” It was the presence of the marine crocodile, however, that gave the islands their name, after the Carib word caymanas. The capital, George Town, was named after King George III of England. Festivals & Events
