The first indigenous peoples of Costa Rica were hunters and gatherers, and when the Spanish conquerors arrived, Costa Rica was divided in two distinct cultural areas – the Mesoamerican and the Andean cultures. Today we see influences of both cultures.

Costa Rica remained a Spanish colony for almost 300 years. In 1821 Costa Rica, together with many other Central American colonies, declared independence from Spain. In 1838 it became an independent country.

Costa Ricans pride themselves on having a society “different” from the rest of Central America. They point to their country’s high levels of education and health, its renowned national parks, and its history of democracy and political stability. Sometimes referred to as the “Switzerland of Central America”.  They have not had an army since the year 1948.

Of Note: Costa Rica is a place for adventure travel given the bio-diversity of the region. It is known for zip-lining, rainforest hiking, whitewater rafting, kayaking, scuba diving and cliff diving, among other adrenaline-pumping activities.
