Curaçao, is in the Caribbean Sea and a country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. It is situated some 37 miles (60 km) north of the coast of Venezuela. Curaçau is part of the 3 islands knowns as the A,B,Cs along with Aruba and Bonaire. The capital is Willemstad.
In many ways, Curaçao is the historical nexus of the Netherlands Antilles. The island, with its large and protected natural port, was charted before the 16th century. Although having a dark past in the slave trade, Curaçao eventually became a major center for mercantile commerce. During WWII, Curaçao was a safe-haven for Dutch multi-national companies, beginning the island’s history as a financial services center.
Of Note The Queen Emma (swinging) Bridge connects the two sides of Curaçao’s multicoloured capital city, Willmestad: Otrobanda (“The Other Side”) and Punda (“The Point”) The multihued buildings date back to a governor who didn’t like white, and he also owned a paint company!
