Italy

Italy is a country shaped like a boot, located in the south-central part of Europe, and occupies a peninsula that juts into the Mediterranean, Tyrrhenian and Adriatic Seas.  The country is shaped like a boot. Mountains crisscross the interior, dividing Italy into 20 regions of which five enjoy a special autonomous status.

Italy’s location has played an important role in its history. The history of Italy covers the Ancient Period, the Middle Ages and the modern era. Rome was founded as a Kingdom in 753 BC and became a Republic in 509 BC. The Roman Republic unified Italy at the expense of the Etruscans, Celts and Greeks whose artifacts and culture remain integrated into modern times.

Italy’s political geography has been conditioned by its rugged landscape. With few direct roads between them, and with passage from one point to another traditionally difficult, Italy’s towns and cities have a history of self-sufficiency and independence.  One can note the marked differences in cuisine and dialect travelling throughout the country.  Italy remains a strong economic, cultural, military and political factor in the 21st century.

Of Note: Italy is the birthplace of the Renaissance, and is the home of great artists, such as Michelangelo and Botticelli.  In fact, Italy has more UNESCO World Heritage cultural sites than any other country on Earth.
