Sint Maarten is the Dutch side of the smallest dual-nation island in the world. The northern portion of this tiny island located in the Leeward Islands of the Caribbean, is French St. Martin. These two countries have amicably shared the island for over 300 years. The island is 34 square miles in total size. Because Sint Maarten is governed under the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and St. Martin is a territory under the government of France, we will treat as two separate destinations. This is particularly relevant as real estate laws differ in each country.
Although borders are gateless, each side has its own particular feel. Dutch St. Maarten on the southern portion of the island has a higher density population than on the French side. Condos and timeshares are abundant on Dutch St. Maarten. The cruise port is located in the capital city of Philipsburg making it a vibrant area for shops, bars and restaurants. This popular area is lined with cobblestone streets and colourful, colonial-style buildings
Sint Maarten has more than 140 different nationalities registered which make it a Caribbean melting pot. The general attitude tends to be more animated than on the French side.
Tourism is this island’s predominant industry so all the conveniences to support this primary economy are in place, including banking, duty free shopping, hotel chains, car rentals and a number of unique and interesting tours. Even Harley-Davidson has established a solid clientele in Dutch St. Maarten. There are over 34 desirable and easily accessible beaches on the island. Those on the Dutch side tend to be more crowded.
Of Note: Guavaberry is the legendary folk liqueur of Sint Maarten/St Martin. It is made from fine oak aged rum, cane sugar and wild Sint Maarten Guavaberries. This rare fruit is found high in the island’s hills and is an integral part of local culture and tradition..
