St Vincent & The Grenadines

St Vincent & The Grenadines is an archipelago in the Windward islands just south of Saint Lucia and about 100 miles (160 km) west of Barbados. St. Vincent, the largest island and where the capitol of Kingstown is located has an area of 133 square miles (344 square km).  There are 32 islands and cays that make up St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG). Nine are inhabited, including the mainland St Vincent and the Grenadines islands: Young Island, Bequia, Mustique, Canouan, Union Island, Mayreau, Petit St Vincent and Palm Island.

Saint Vincent was among the last set of Caribbean islands to be colonized by Europeans. The indigenous people, the Carib, rebuffed attempts at settlement by the Dutch, French, and British until the early 18th century, when they allowed the French to settle on part of the western (leeward) side of the island. In 1979, St. Vincent and The Grenadines became an independent country and is now part of the Commonwealth.

The island of St. Vincent is rugged with the volcano Soufriere in the north part of the country. Mesopotamia, a large extinct volcanic crater in the centre of the island is known as the “Breadbasket” of the Caribbean. The rich soil is a valuable asset to the agricultural economy.  Lush rain forests, waterfalls and streams make this an adventure travelers paradise.

The Grenadines however are a haven for boaters.  The stunning scenery in this chain of islands are abundant with white-sand beaches and palm-lined bays which offer a safe haven for luxury mega yachts and sailboats.

Of Note: Nine Mornings is a unique Vincentian festivity associated with the Christmas season. Nine Mornings before Christmas, Vincentians awake in the early hours of the morning and partake in a range of activities, among them sea baths, dances (or in local parlance, fetes), bicycle riding and street concerts.
